October 1st: Sorry this is coming out late I fell asleep on the couch last night and just went straight to bed after that. Duke is more alert today with the mask, but he still keeps his eyes closed the majority of the time. The nurses told me he would keep his eyes closed more at first because the pressure of the strap under his eyes which would cause them to need to stay closed. Duke is such a trooper he now wants to keep his eyes more open and he fights going back to sleep after his stats time, but I calm him down by stroking his hair and he will go back to sleep. The respiratory therapist said the mask will most likely come off on Monday and he will go back to the prong oxygen he had before at lower settings (you can’t just take him off it).
The belly band on his diaphragm is going well, the occupational therapist is going to check it on Monday to remove it and put another one on it. She said his breathing has improved since wearing it visibly because he is breathing through his ribs much more deeply. They said we will keep this up for a while because it is only making his lungs stronger…and I have no problem with that. Strong lungs = strong baby. Duke is also back up to his birth weight (which is awesome!)
I can tell all the differences in his breathing during kangaroo time because he now snores. As first I thought it was a leak in one of the lines, but the nurse said it was his him snoring, which means he is REALLY breathing deeply because he is comfortable, which is why I made it a point to double the kangaroo time than the usual time.
**Thank you to Kathy Winger for making dinner for our family last night, I seriously need the recipe for the Turkey meatloaf!**
